Normally, every person carries two copies of every gene, one inherited from their mother, one inherited from their father. The human genome is believed to contain around 20,000 – 25,000 genes.
Most of the time, testing is used to find changes that are associated with inherited disorders. The results of a genetic test can confirm or rule out a suspected genetic condition or help determine a person’s chance of developing or passing on a genetic disorder. Since genetic testing may open up ethical or psychological problems, genetic testing is often accompanied by genetic counseling.

Should we add Chromosome 47 to the Human Genome?
Recent research has indicated that adding a missing gene to a separate chromosome in stem cells is “probably” the safest means of gene repair. This extra cromosome could be a repair kit for genetic diseases… but?

Some researchers regard artificial chromosomes as the most promising method for germ-line genetic engineering of humans (New Scientist, 3 October 1998, p 24). One day our children might have 47 chromosomes.
Chromosome 2 of the human genome is actually a fusing of 2 chimp chromosomes & they combined are almost a duplicate of human chromosome.
